Abstract

The Tourism Area Life Cycle Model(TALC) is a theory formulated in 1980 by Doctor Richard Butler and which has become one of the most used and recognized tools to describe the evolution of tourist destinations. Various researchers have made contributions to the model, in response to this context, this research aimed to update the debate around the TALC. Its study is of the greatest importance since it is currently one of the most widely used tools in the planning of tourist destinations. The present work constitutes a review of the literature about the TALC, where its evolution is presented through the vision and adaptations of different researchers. It began with the definition and explanation of the Model, then the contributions found were organized chronologically, analyzed, and segmented as validations, sustainability contributions, adaptations and recurring criticisms. As a result, this study showsan updated and nuanced vision of the Tourism Are Life Cycle Model where the criticisms and contributions are very diverse, however, we can mentionsome such as the lack of delimitation between the phases of the cycle or indicators to establish the phase, it cannot be generalized since each destination is unique, the lack of operability, ignores the segments, etc. With the critiques and contributionsreviewed, the work concludes that the TALC is still valid as an instrument to guide strategies in the management of a tourist destination although it must consider adaptations.
