Abstract
Tourism as a productive activity has been a key driver for the economic development of communities and regions that have little industrial development but have a wide variety of cultural and natural resources. The objective of this work is to analyze the relationship between tourism activity and the level of development in the entities and tourist routes ofthe Mundo Maya region in Mexico. The methodology involves the construction of two databases, one at the route level and the other at the municipal level. The degree of relationship that tourism indices have with different development indices (Human Development Index, Marginalization Index and Poverty Index) was analyzed. The analysis period covered by research runs from 2010 to 2020. The municipalities considered for the study are those that are offered on the different tourist routes and with available information. The information used was obtained from the databases of the National System of Statistical Information of the Tourism Sector of Mexico (DATATUR), the National Council for the Evaluation of Development Policy (CONEVAL), the National Population Council (CONAPO) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). It is concluded that tourism activity is an important source of development generation, but it has not yet managed to impact in a more balanced way the municipalities, entities and tourist routes of the Mundo Maya region in Mexico.
