Abstract

Adventure tourism has shown sustainable growth worldwide, establishing itself as a significant segment of the tourism industry. In this context, kayaking is a water sport that combines recreation, nature, and controlled risks, all of which influence tourists’ perceptions of risk and safety. The purpose of this study was to analyze the scientific literature on safety and risk perception in kayaking tourism, as well as their influence on tourist behavior. A systematic narrative review of the literature was conducted using a qualitative approach, thematic analysis, and a descriptive-analytical design. The search was performed in Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, supplemented by academic repositories, considering articles published between 2000 and 2024. A total of 27 studies were identified, of which 11 were excluded for failing to meet inclusion criteria, leaving 16 articles analyzed, including 4 specifically on kayaking. The findings show that risk perception influences tourists’ intention to participate, satisfaction, and loyalty, highlighting risk management, guide training, and safety protocols as determining factors. It is concluded that there is a research gap in Latin America regarding specific studies on kayaking tourism.
